Maryem Irias

Pronouns: She / Her / Ella

I was born on the ancestral, and unceded territory of the Kizh nation, “Tovaangar” presently known as Los Angeles. Grateful to the Tongva/Kizh ancestors, elders, relatives, past, present, and emerging who continue to steward this beautiful land.

I have spent most of my life here learning, living, creating, being in community, being of service as a public school secondary English teacher, a yoga/meditation teacher, and the past decade serving as a healing practitioner and integrative psychotherapist. One of my greatest joys and honor is to mother three humans, three dogs, a cat, and mare alongside my partner. I am humbled everyday by the complexity and beauty of these relationships.

My mountain is the beautiful San Gabriel range which creates a formidable backdrop to the San Gabriel Valley. My water place is the Arroyo Seco, literally a dry rivulet and the magnificent Pacific Ocean. My parents immigrated to the US from Nicaragua and Ecuador—I carry within my bones the lands they left behind, dreams deferred, illumined hope, their awe inspiring resiliency, their devotion, service, and above all, their love. My ancestors are Indigenous Meso-American, Iberian, Mediterranean, North and West African, as well as West Asian.

I am called to serve Latinx, Black, Indigenous, Bodies of Culture, LGBTQIA+ communities and any group living on the margins. I honor the relationship between issues of injustice, systemic oppression, intergenerational trauma, personal/collective mythology, psyche, soma, spirituality, and ecology.

“To be human is to become visible while carrying what is hidden as a gift to others. To remember the other world in this world is to live in your true inheritance.”
